Important Announcement from Chairman Pete Burkhimer TO: The Chesapeake City Committee of the Republican Party of Virginia and Other Interested Republicans in the City of Chesapeake FROM: Pete Burkhimer, Chairman, Chesapeake City Committee DATE: March 16, 2009 SUBJECT: March 28, 2009 MASS MEETING to Elect Delegates and Alternates to the May 29-30 RPV Convention There has been discussion about the requirement in the Official Call to the Mass meeting which states “A Delegate must be present at the Mass Meeting to be elected.” A number of persons who are willing and able to attend Convention, but cannot attend the Mass Meeting, have objected to the requirement. We have determined that a person who is otherwise properly qualified to be a Delegate, and properly pre-files for election as a delegate by the Friday, March 20, 2009 deadline, may be elected as an Alternate Delegate, even if they are not present at the Mass Meeting. Literally, the “must be present” requirement applies to Delegates and not Alternates. If the total number of persons elected at the Mass Meeting as both Delegates and Alternate Delegates turns out to be less than Chesapeake’s total allotment of Delegates, then the Mass Meeting could, at its pleasure, vote to convert all Alternate Delegates to full Delegate status. Accordingly, we recommend that those persons interested in attending the Convention, but who are unable to attend the Mass Meeting, go ahead and pre-file by the deadline of 6 p.m. on this Friday, March 20, 2009, which is the deadline set forth in the Official Call.
